Future Tense

Talk about plans and future events using the simple future tense.

Lesson

Near future (futur proche) — going to:

Subject + aller (present) + infinitive

Je vais manger. — I am going to eat.

Nous allons voyager. — We are going to travel.

Simple future (futur simple) — will:

Add future endings to the infinitive stem:

-ai, -as, -a, -ons, -ez, -ont

Regular: manger → je mangerai, tu mangeras…

Je mangerai à midi. — I will eat at noon.
Il partira demain. — He will leave tomorrow.

Irregular stems:

être → ser- (je serai — I will be)
avoir → aur- (j'aurai — I will have)
aller → ir- (j'irai — I will go)
faire → fer- (je ferai — I will do)
venir → viendr- (je viendrai — I will come)

Vocabulary

Grammar tip

Futur proche vs futur simple: Use futur proche (je vais + infinitive) for plans in the very near future or certainties. Use futur simple for more distant plans, predictions, or promises. Both are correct in most situations.
