The imperfect (l'imparfait) describes ongoing past states, habits, and background descriptions.
Formation: Take the nous form of the present tense, drop -ons, add: -ais, -ais, -ait, -ions, -iez, -aient
manger → nous mangeons → je mangeais, tu mangeais…
être (only irregular): j'étais, tu étais, il était…
Uses vs Passé Composé:
Quand j'étais enfant, je jouais au foot. (When I was a child, I used to play football.)
Hier, j'ai joué au foot. (Yesterday, I played football.)
Together in a story:
Il faisait beau quand soudain il a commencé à pleuvoir.
(The weather was fine when suddenly it started to rain.)

Imparfait for politeness: The imparfait is also used in formal contexts for polite requests, softening the present: Je voulais vous demander... (I wanted to ask you...) instead of Je veux vous demander... This is very common in professional settings.
