Getting Around — Directions

Ask for and give directions, and understand public transport vocabulary.

Lesson

Asking for directions:

Où est...? — Where is...?
Comment aller à...? — How do I get to...?
Excusez-moi, je suis perdu(e). — Excuse me, I am lost.

Giving directions:

Tournez à gauche. — Turn left.
Tournez à droite. — Turn right.
Allez tout droit. — Go straight ahead.
Prenez la première rue à gauche. — Take the first street on the left.
C'est à côté de... — It's next to...
C'est en face de... — It's opposite...
C'est loin/près d'ici. — It's far/near from here.

le métro — subway
le bus — bus
le train — train
à pied — on foot

Grammar tip

Imperative mood: Commands in French drop the subject pronoun. "You turn" (vous tournez) becomes "Turn!" (Tournez !). For -er verbs in the tu form, drop the final "s": va (go), not vas.
