Question words:
Three ways to form questions:
1. Rising intonation: Tu parles français ?
2. Est-ce que: Est-ce que tu parles français ?
3. Inversion: Parles-tu français ? (formal)
| French | English | Example |
|---|---|---|
| qui | who | Qui est cette personne ? |
| où | where | Où est la gare ? |
| quand | when | Quand pars-tu ? |
| pourquoi | why | Pourquoi tu pleures ? |
| combien | how much/many | Combien ça coûte ? |
| comment | how | Comment tu t'appelles ? |
| Word | Phonetic | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| pourquoi | poor-KWAH | Stress on "kwah" |
| combien | kohm-BYAN | Ends with nasal "yan" |
| qu'est-ce que | kess-kuh | Very fast in natural speech: "keskuh" |
Inversion note: In formal written French, inversion is preferred. When the verb ends in a vowel and is followed by il, elle, or on, insert a -t-: A-t-il faim ? (Is he hungry?) This "euphonic t" prevents two vowels from clashing.
